Remembering the Moment Jean-Michel Basquiat Became a Fashion Icon
How Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons runway changed style and art forever in 1986.

You’ve no doubt seen images of it before. The year is 1986 and Jean-Michel Basquiat is walking Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons Homme Plus SS87 show. Framed by a front row of fashion editors, his expression is a mix of listlessness and timid reserve. The suits he’s been dressed in—stone-hued and double-breasted, clad in a multitude of 19th-century buttons—lend a soft, even schoolboyish vulnerability. They’re boxy yet paradoxically slim, a departure from the artist’s affinity for the oversized Armani power suits that dominated the ’80s.
