American historian Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) in 1915 in order to promote, research, preserve, interpret, and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community. The organization created Negro History Week in 1926, establishing a national theme for the annual celebration in order to focus the attention of the public.

In 1976, ASALH extended the celebration for all of February, introducing the world to Black History Month. From Negro History Week to Black History Month, the chosen themes have reflected changes in how people of African descent in the United States have viewed themselves, the influence of social movements on racial ideologies and the aspirations of the Black community.

2022’s theme is Black Health and Wellness, and spotlights everything from the legacy of Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine to preventative care and body positivity in the Black community. In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the racial disparities that continue to exist in healthcare, access to resources that protect and promote Black people is more vital than ever. In recognition of Black History Month 2022, we’ve highlighted physical and mental health resources that provide support for Black communities.

Additionally, Jazzi McGilbert of Black-owned LA concept bookshop and creative space Reparations Club has curated a reading list with titles intended to broaden perspectives, creating a more just and equitable society for all.
