Ken Heyman ignored the conventions of documentary photojournalism for 'Hipshot,' literally snapping pictures from the hip. Utilizing a point-and-shoot camera and relying on autofocus, Heyman captured life in and around the streets of New York City without ever looking through the viewfinder. As a result, 'Hipshot' embodies an impromptu, organic look at the day-to-day lives of his subjects, recontextualizing the mundane into something extraordinary. Originally published by the New York Aperture Foundation in 1988, the volume features a foreword by author and journalist Pete Hamill.
