City Influence: London

Essential styles from the English capital’s most iconic brands.

hero

London’s dynamic style scene is a game of contrasts; a juxtaposition of punk and polished, past and present. From Burberry and Martine Rose to Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, a number of iconic names make up the formidable skyline of British fashion from afar. But scrappy Central Saint Martins graduates are constantly shifting the landscape, showcasing collections from torch-lit garages deep in the recesses of East London. After all, it’s these visionary brands and streetwear-inflected upstarts that have transformed the city into a haven for avant-garde and experimental design.

Today, the English capital’s style influence extends far beyond its borders, frequently setting the agenda for the fashion industry at large. Below, a selection of 12 pieces from London’s pantheon of homegrown talent.

Martine Rose x Wmns Shox Mule MR4 'Metallic Silver'

Martine Rose’s references to football culture and sportswear are well documented. Her inspirations come to the forefront on this Shox Mule collaboration with Nike. The avant-garde silhouette embodies Rose's signature aesthetic, constructed from a silver-tinted synthetic leather upper and embroidered with a Swoosh. Extra-tall Nike Shox columns appear at the heel, elevating the shoe's profile.

Burberry Metallic Paillette-Embellished Mesh Top 'Silver'

Riccardo Tisci helped revitalize Britain’s most iconic house during his four-year tenure. Influenced by Burberry’s Equestrian Knight logo, Tisci envisioned modern-day armor for women, a theme expressed through this form-fitting mesh top embellished with metallic silver paillettes.

Y-3 x Palace Football T-Shirt 'White/Red'

Uniting performance with irreverent design, Y-3 and Palace’s FW22 football tee is reminiscent of ’90s jerseys, an era when sponsors' logos featured prominently on kits. The rose, England's national flower, decorates the front and back, while Y-3, Palace and Yohji Yamamoto branding lands on the chest.

Pre-Owned Vivienne Westwood Vintage 1970's Original Punk Gang Muslin Shirt 'Cream'

A true piece of fashion history, this vintage muslin shirt, held together by D-rings and slashed at the collarbone, is a relic of Malcolm McLaren's time with Vivienne Westwood. Decades since the two changed style forever, items such as this are among the few remaining artifacts from the duo’s iconic SEX shop, a boutique located on King's Road in the late ’70s.

Vintage Wales Bonner Embroidered Collar Zip Jacket 'Navy'

For FW15, British designer Grace Wales Bonner celebrated Black identity, adorning the collar of this navy jacket with cowrie shells (once used as currency in Africa). The piece is equally influenced by formalwear from the Harlem Renaissance, with the jacket's fitted silhouette reminiscent of tailored styles worn during that period.

A-Cold-Wall* 3D Pocket Long-Sleeve Polo 'Silver'

A-COLD-WALL* founder Samuel Ross draws on London's brutalist architecture, paying tribute to the city’s concrete and steel structures through a metallic silver half-zip polo. Blue lines bisect the torso and sleeves, while a patch pocket equipped with a compass brings a functional element to the design.

Wales Bonner Brooklyn Denim Jacket 'Blue'

Grace Wales Bonner reimagines a wardrobe classic with her signature vintage-inspired aesthetic, rendering a zip-up jacket in indigo raw denim. The fitted garment is accented with contrast stitching on the chest, pockets, hem and cuffs. A dark brown faux crocodile leather patch appears at the back, stamped with a Wales Bonner logo in gold.

Martine Rose x Air Monarch IV 'White Navy'

Her first collaboration with Nike, Martine Rose distorts the dad-friendly Air Monarch IV with experimental protrusions on the midfoot and toe box. The unusual design first came into being when the menswear visionary fitted a size 18 upper onto size 9 tooling. The result was a warped effect, which Rose later recreated through PU inserts underneath the white leather upper.

Alexander McQueen Graffiti Hoops 'Crystal'

These graffiti-logo hoop earrings are reminiscent of a moment embedded in runway history. Creative director Sarah Burton honors Alexander McQueen's legacy through brushstroke-style lettering that nods to the late founder's SS99 show, a presentation remembered for its spray-paint finale.

A-Cold-Wall* Puffer Panelled Jacket Vest 'Orange'

Samuel Ross’ utilitarian design approach is highlighted through an orange vest with puffer paneling. Zip pockets featuring ACW branding are placed on the garment in the designer's signature haphazard fashion, while an oversized flap pocket appears at the back.

Burberry Detachable Hood Night Check Puffer Jacket 'Dark Charcoal Blue/White'

Perhaps the most recognizable print in British fashion history, Burberry’s legendary check pattern is enlarged and set against a dark blue backdrop on this puffer jacket. The motif was first used to line the brand’s raincoats in the 1920s. Today, it is visible across an expansive range of styles.

Alexander McQueen T-Shirt 'White/Acid Yellow'

Sarah Burton applies acid yellow and black hues to a white T-shirt. The vibrant print pays homage to Alexander McQueen's legendary No. 13 collection, which concluded with model Shalom Harlow standing on a rotating platform in a white trapeze dress while being spray-painted by machines.
