The Dunk originated as a basketball shoe and for the first years of its existence, that’s how it was worn. In the 1990s, however, skateboarders began wearing it after realizing that basketball features—such as an extra wide tongue and a pivot traction pattern—suited their own sport well. In 2001, Nike SB made the shift official and took over the silhouette.
