ARCHIVISTS: The Legendary Nike Mag
Celebrating more than 30 years of the Nike Mag, first seen in the 1989 film Back to the Future II.
“The Nike Mags are definitely the greatest sneaker of all time—it’s not even close,” says Keith ‘Bang Bang’ McCurdy. “There’s no shoe that’s ever come out or is going to come out that I will covet as much as my Mags,” offers the world-renowned tattoo artist who counts Rihanna, LeBron James, Cara Delevigne and Odell Beckham Jr. among his clients.
The iconic sneaker first debuted in the 1989 Robert Zemeckis-directed sci-fi favorite film, Back to the Future II—a blockbuster hit that would ultimately gross $336 million in box office sales.
One subtle focus of the film is the growing culture of brands. BTTF II’s production designer, Rick Carter (also behind films such as A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Avatar and the latest Star Wars movie) recalls the ‘80s being an era of products and branding fascination. "This was no longer the hippie era where everything that was of corporations was being pushed to the side in terms of being hip or cool. It was a celebration of what the culture and the economy was creating," Carter told NPR. From Marty’s Mattel brand Hoverboard to his Nike Mags, the sci-fi sequel was jam-packed with the product of the future.
Known for his iconic Air Max 1 and Air Jordan 3 sneaker designs, Tinker Hatfield recalls the moment Robert Zemeckis asked him to design the Nike Mag. “Being asked to think that far into the future [28 years into the future]—that was a gift of sorts because that wasn’t a normal thing for me to think that far ahead,” Hatfield said.
The Mag boasted self-lacing technology, a futuristic touch Nike would later make their own.
