Breaking Taiwan’s Beauty Codes With OOO-ing Studio
How one hair salon’s psychedelic designs embody a new creative energy in Taichung's Nantun District.

The subtropical climate of Taiwan is home to a wide array of species: endemic songbirds, orchids, insects. Caterpillars in particular are fuzzy and tufted, featuring sprays of vibrant scarlet, black stripes and iridescent turquoise dots—the more intricate the colors and patterning, often the more venomous the insect. “My first thought was how beautiful it was—then I wondered how I could copy it in my work,” says Light Liou of a caterpillar she saw recently while camping, “but staying away from something poisonous was the last thought on my mind!”
