The Air Jordan 5 Retro 'Raging Bull' Roars Back to Life
Celebrating Michael Jordan’s iconic legacy with the Chicago Bulls.
The Air Jordan 5 first released in 1990, a season Michael Jordan dominated with the Chicago Bulls.
Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the AJ5 takes inspiration from the WWII Mustang P-51 fighter plane, implementing aggressive lines into a layered silhouette. Details include nubuck and leather uppers, a shark teeth motif across the midsole and a reflective 3M tongue, all sitting atop a visible Nike Air unit.
Since its debut more than 30 years ago, certain colorways have become timeless classics, including the Jordan 5 ‘Raging Bull.’ The concept was initially released as a two-shoe pack in 2009 and took inspiration from the Toro Bravo, a breed of bull known for the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain.
Today the pack is remembered for its use of bold colors and materials, alongside its unique packaging: an oversized box housing both pairs, outfitted in a wood print that recalls the gates holding the bulls back.
The Air Jordan 5 Retro ‘Raging Bull’ 2021 marks the pair’s first ever re-release. Returning true to form, a vibrant University Red upper stands out against a black collar lining, midsole and lace loops. Signature elements include the number ‘23’ stitched on the lateral heel, with the Jumpman logo appearing on the rear.
The only divergence from the original release, the 2021 iteration features icy blue outsoles in place of the clear translucent outsoles used in 2009. The familiar wood-print box rounds out the re-release.
