Packing for the Apocalypse With Shlohmo
From ’06 Bapestas to Three 6 Mafia cassettes, the LA-based producer and DJ shares the grails he’s taking with him for the End Times.
For most, the idea of a looming Armageddon is completely implausible, the fodder of films, video games and TV shows. Not for LA-based producer, DJ and Wedidit Records founder Henry Laufer, better known as Shlohmo.
From ominously titled tracks like “The End,” “Emerge from Smoke'' and “Meet Ur Maker” to the fiery music videos for “Heaven Inc.” and "Misanthrope," Shlohmo’s visual and aural aesthetic oeuvre is one that has more than a passing fascination in Earth’s demise. Speculating as to how people will dress post-Armageddon, Shlohmo asserts that “utility and function will certainly be the way.”
In the same vein of asking yourself what pieces you’d bring with you if you were stranded on a desert island, posing the idea of the End of Days reveals how much value you place on the things you own and what determines their worth.
For Shlohmo, a sentimental connection is key: “I don’t put much weight in trends or what people like currently. I just pick and choose what feels special or important to me, whether it’s a new piece or something old I’m trying to collect for my own nostalgic fulfillment. [My] value in clothing is linked to a feeling more than an investment or resale. I wear everything I buy, and I love saving and keeping everything.”
Below, Shlohmo taps into his inner Doomsday Prepper, presenting his favorite pieces from his personal collection.
