Embracing Euphoria at Romy’s Club Mid Air
The xx co-founder on discovering new avenues of artistic expression and redefining club culture in GREATEST 09.
Romy Madley Croft never had any designs to launch a solo album, let alone in the dance music genre. After a decade in The xx, the band she joined at 15, the singer took a hiatus to explore other creative avenues and take a moment out of the spotlight. As bandmates Jamie xx and Oliver Sim worked on solo material, Romy began songwriting for artists like King Princess and Dua Lipa. It was while working on the Dua Lipa track “Electricity” that Romy first contemplated going it alone. “I sang the original demo, heard my voice on this pop dance sound and loved it. Mark Ronson asked me if I would sing it myself, but it just wasn’t the right time. I don’t think I had the confidence.”
