Nike unveiled the Air Tailwind in 1978, a streamlined running sneaker that heralded a new dawn for footwear technology by incorporating Air cushioning inside the sole. In 1987, footwear designer Tinker Hatfield made Air visible for the first time with an exposed “pill” window inspired by the inside-out design of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. The groundbreaking shoe would become known as the Air Max 1, kickstarting the Air Max line.

From that day forward, some of Nike’s most experimental silhouettes have been released under the Air Max banner, reshaping the global footwear landscape. The Air Max series has evolved since its debut, spanning countless colorways and styles, while retaining the technical spirit that informed the original designs. Today, Nike celebrates the release of the original Air Max 1 with Air Max Day, an annual celebration on March 26 that sees the release of new and retro Air Max styles.

Across the board, Air Max shoes are continually pushing material advancements and comfort innovations, affecting the shape, fit and size. When selecting Air Max shoes, there are certain variables to consider, from feet width to performance requirements. Below, a guide to Air Max sizing.

How Do Air Max Fit?

Generally, all models in the Air Max range fit true to size, but may differ slightly depending on the year of release and materials. People with wider feet or those who prefer to wear thicker socks can go a half size up. Conversely, people with narrower feet can go a half size down for a snugger fit.

Air Max 1 Size and Fit

The Air Max 1 fits true to size in all variations, whether Hyperfuse, Flyknit or Premium. Nonetheless, people with wider feet may prefer to go a half size up, while those with narrower feet may prefer to go a half size down. It should be noted that the Air Max 1 tends to loosen with wear, so it is generally advised to select your normal size.

Air Max 90 Size and Fit

The Air Max 90 fits slightly narrower than the Air Max 1, but not to the extent it merits going up a half size (an exception may be made for those with wider feet). It is recommended to select your normal size in the Air Max 90.

Air Max 97 Size and Fit

Some people prefer to go a half size up on the Air Max 97 as the sneaker can be harder to break in than other Air Max models (this is particularly applicable in the case of the OG version). Nonetheless, it is recommended to select your normal size as the toe box should relax after several wears. For those who have wider feet or prefer a roomier fit, it is advisable to go a half size up.

Air Max 270 Size and Fit

Despite not being as malleable to the foot, the Air Max 270 fits true to size. A half size up is recommended for wider feet. This also applies to the React variations of the shoe, which fit the same. In all cases, the elevated midsole may take some getting used to.

It should be noted that the Air Max 270 was the first model in the series designed specifically for lifestyle wear, meaning it is not an ideal silhouette for sports or other rigorous performance activities.

Women’s Air Max Fit

Like men’s sizing, Air Max shoes for women generally fit true to size. However, women with narrow or wide feet are advised to go down or up a half size, respectively. While most Air Max silhouettes are available in men’s and women’s sizing, the Air Max Thea is only available in women’s sizing.

Other Air Max Model Sizing

The Air Max line continues to evolve with new models every year. Below, a guide to additional models in the Air Max line and how they fit.

Air Max 180

For most people, it is recommended to select your normal size in Air Max 180 sneakers. However, certain AM 180 models may feel slightly tighter in the midfoot area, but not enough to merit going up a half size. Exceptions include those with wider feet.

Air Max BW

The Air Max BW takes its name from the enlarged Air bubble, or “Big Window,” in the midsole. Despite its bulkier appearance, the Air Max BW fits true to size.

Air Max 93

The Air Max 93 fits true to size. The shoe has slightly more space at the toe than other Air Max shoes, but not enough to merit sizing down. Exceptions include those with narrow feet.

Air Max 95

As is the case for most models in the Air Max range, the Air Max 95 fits true to size. People with wider feet may prefer to go a half size up.

Air Max 98

The Air Max 98 fits true to size, including all collaborative iterations.

Nike TN Air Max Plus

The TN Air Max Plus fits true to size. Generally, it is not necessary to go a half size up, even if you have wider feet.

Air Max 360

The Air Max 360 is one of the few models in the Air Max series that does not fit true to size. The silhouette runs slightly snug and it is recommended to select a half size up for those who have wider feet or prefer more room.

Air VaporMax

The Air VaporMax’s avant-garde design means it is a little narrower in the toe than other Air Max silhouettes. For those with wider feet, it is advisable to select a half size up. However, most people should be fine to select their normal size.

How Comfortable Are Air Maxes?

Air Max are considered among the most comfortable sneakers available. Although most models today are geared toward lifestyle use, Air Max shoes can be worn during light workout activities and short runs. However, it is advisable to seek out a specialist shoe for intensive training programs, long-distance running and specific sports such as basketball.

Narrow vs Wide Feet

As outlined above, Air Max shoes generally fit true to size. However, those with narrow or wide feet are advised to go down or up a half size, respectively.

Size Conversions

There is a size difference of approximately 1.5 US sizes when converting men’s to women’s sizes in Nike Air Max shoes. For example, a men’s US size 6 is roughly equivalent to a women's US size 7.5. This is also true of women’s to men’s sizes.
